Spend a lively and supportive weekend
learning travel writing from veteran travel editor John Flinn.
Whether you’re new to
professional writing or have been published, you’ll learn
how to turn your travel experiences into magazine and newspaper
articles that sell.
John edited the award-winning San Francisco Chronicle Travel Section
for 14 years and is a winner of a Lowell Thomas Award for Travel
Journalist of the Year from the Society of American Travel Writers.
His writing has appeared in Outside Magazine, Sunset, VIA, Coastal
Living, Climbing, and numerous anthologies, including “Travelers’ Tales:
Tuscany” and “Not So Funny When It Happened.”
John’s students have been published in National Geographic
Travel, Travel & Leisure, Conde Nast Travel, National Geographic
Adventure, the New York Times and the Los Angeles Times.
“I have taught travel writing with John Flinn many times. He is
clear, sensitive, sometimes even wise and he often uses humor to make his most
important points. John is the teacher I wish I had had many
years ago.”
–Tim Cahill,
author of “Jaguars
Ripped My Flesh,” “Pecked to Death by Ducks,” “Hold
the Enlightenment” and other adventure travel classics.
“John completely demystified the process of travel writing.
I walked into his class having never sold a single travel article.
A year later, I'd sold 30.”
– Janis Cooke Newman, author
of “Mary,” and “The
Russian Word for Snow.”
Classes are held in the studio-home of artists Janice Crow and
John Curry. Delicious and healthy lunches and snacks are served
outside in the garden, weather permitting.
You will learn:
*How to travel as a writer, rather than as a tourist.
*Where to discover the images and anecdotes that capture the essence
of a place.
*How to bring a place alive on the page.
*How to write an opening that will hook readers.
*A basic framework that takes much of the fear and frustration
out of writing.
*The new non-narrative style many magazines are using.
*How to successfully pitch your stories to editors.

SARK's Succulent Wild Wisdom Workshop
Live Abundantly in Love, Work & Creativity, No Matter What Your
Circumstances
Saturday and Sunday May 8-9 10AM - 4PM
Starwae Sonoma, California |
| You are creatively and abundantly gifted and this
workshop will support you in knowing it, claiming it and living an
even more succulent wise life. It's not what happens to
you, it's what you do with what happens to you.
Succulent; Ripe, juicy, whole, round, exuberant, wild, rich,
wide, deep, rare. A succulent is also a plant that receives its nourishment
from the inside- it gathers water and then nourishes itself. It is self-sufficient
and self-sustaining, and offers great beauty and usefulness to the world.
This workshop will focus on 3 succulent areas of life:
Love
* self-love; how true self-love expands our capacity for love in all
directions
Work
* succulent work; how the work you do can more fully nourish who you
are
Creativity
* active creativity; how a daily creative practice feeds everything
else you do and are
We will gather wisdom together in the following ways:
* Mentoring pairs: you will be guided in a simple yet deep process of
mentoring each other and providing you with marvelous new perspectives
and an inspired plan of action
* Solution-finding: we will utilize the group wisdom to answer your specific
questions until you are leaping with enthusiasm
* Support-building: you will learn and experience how to teach others
to support you, and new ways to support yourself
* Game playing: you will play and experience the SARK game "creative
dreams made REAL" to solidify your creative ideas
* Guidebook creating: you will create a guidebook in the workshop, containing
the wisdom gathered, for you to utilize and continue to put into motion
in your life
Cost of workshop: $345 if you register before April 8. $395 after.
Includes delicious lunch and snacks, not lodging.
